PASCOLI-S. CHIARA
Foggia is a city located in Apulia, Southern Italy, capital of the province of Foggia with 153.143 people living there. Foggia is also the main city of a plain called Tavoliere, also known as the "Granary of Italy".
Gargano, the spur of Italy, the first area you come across on reaching Apulia from the north, famous for its beautiful ancient towns, a mountainous inland area and fine sandy beaches, like those in the Manfredonia Gulf, followed by high, rugged cliffs, with beautiful caves, ravines and picturesque coves, which can sometimes only be reached by sea, characterising the landscape before Vieste, the most popular and fashionable resort in Gargano, with its traditional medieval village made up of narrow streets and white houses, dominated by the 13thcentury castle.
Before arriving in Vieste, it’s certainly worth stopping off at the famous Mattinata beach (1) “Gargano’s white butterfly”, sitting on a small hill covered with olive groves and almond trees, like a white butterfly on a flower.
Do not miss the beautiful Baia delle Zagare with its famous stacks a few metres from the shore. Along this stretch of coast, there are also many caves, such as the ‘Grotta dei Sogni’, the ‘Grotta dei Pipistrelli’ and the ‘Grotta dei Contrabbandieri’.
A few miles off the Gargano coast are the wild Tremiti Islands with the marine reserve that surrounds them, but the inland area also deserves attention, contained within the Gargano National Park.
